Current of Contemporary Art | The Play | 1969

The Play were an art commune in the latter half of the 20th century, with a fluid list of members, not all of whom considered themselves artists. Throughout their time as a collective, the Play have engaged in various activities, many of which have been unsuccessful, and their purpose, difficult to decipher.

For example the above image shows Voyage: Happening in an Egg, a resin egg which disappeared soon after it was launched. The Play’s projects were often poorly planned, and whatever meaning that was supposed to be communicated, was thereby lost.

Current of Contemporary Art (1969) the collective sailed an arrow-shaped styrofoam raft down the Yodo and Ookawa rivers, while undertaking activities. In later years they repeated variations on the same project.

Although I don’t understand the purpose behind a lot of The Play’s work, I like the key concept of enjoying oneself and having fun. I think it’s very key to the theme of happiness that runs through my project.
